about

The Hollow Grinders Dig Chicks! captures the Hollow Grinders as you'll never hear them again - the legendary three piece lineup with Biff T Bangle on guitar. Twelve original surf compositions including all your live faves, all performed live in the studio with as few takes as possible!

RIP IT UP (4 Stars)

They claim to be NZs only surf instrumental band at the moment, or at least DJ Phil Dirt, a legendary San Francisco surf DJ, says so. The Hollow Grinders say they are not just a bunch of spotty anoraks recycling their Stooges collection - they're the real thing. Authentic, sleazy and pub hardened with authentic maturity and commitment problems. Sometimes fast and furious, other times more moody and textural, this is well played and evocative stuff. On "Pania (of the Reef)", the Grinders get all romantic and epic, like The Shadows with a bit of organ thrown in; on "Rhythm and Swing" [sic]. But at the same time, the coastline of the songs is clearly a southern one: moody, beautiful, uncrowded.

REAL GROOVE

Surf music is a simple concept - and damn hard to do well. The Hollow Grinders must be masters of the art and lifestyle, because their debut album "Dig Chicks!", is fantastic, salt-enriched nostalgia. This is wave-to-wave, surf fever, instrumental rock n' roll, as heard every Saturday night at the surf club dance. From Hamilton, or as the press release states, the Claudelands Beach Boardriders' Club (1996) inc., The Hollow Grinders play music that reeks of 60s musical memories, set to the sound of homegrown reverb and the odd Piha rip warning.
